In cells without oxidative stress, Keap1 (Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1), a cysteine (Cys)-rich protein (27 Cys residues in human and 25 in mouse), normally binds Nrf2 (also called nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2 or Nfe2l2), a master transcription factor for cellular antioxidant responses, and functions as an adaptor for a Cullin 3 (Cul3)-based E3 ubiquitin ligase complex to promote polyubiquitination and proteasomal degradation of Nrf2 31,32,33,34
